Six weeks before our second child was due I began bleeding...
Six weeks before our second child was due I began bleeding profusely. After I was admitted to the hospital, the doctor reported to my husband and my mother that he was concerned for the lives of both my baby and me. Because contractions had not begun, the doctor consulted with a second doctor on the advisability of performing a Caesarean section. My mother called a former Christian Science Sunday School teacher of mine, who prayed for me. Shortly afterward, contractions began.
At one point the doctor was unable to detect the baby's heartbeat. I can remember finding comfort in the hymn "Mother's Evening Prayer" with words by Mary Baker Eddy (Christian Science Hymnal). The first line says, "O gentle presence, peace and joy and power."
