In August 1986 I was invited by a friend to spend a few weeks with his family in Guayaquil, Ecuador. I enjoy traveling and thought that a trip to South America would be a valuable experience. After one week in Guayaquil, we all decided to travel up into the Andes Mountains to Quito, the capital of Ecuador. Toward the end of the second day there, I began to feel ill, and by the time we returned to Guayaquil a day later, I found myself in bed with a high fever, unable to eat anything.

I knew that I needed to understand more of my spiritual relationship to God. I attempted to hold to basic, spiritual truths I had learned in Christian Science Sunday School and in Christian Science class instruction. The following sentence from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy was very helpful to me: "Health is not a condition of matter, but of Mind; nor can the material senses bear reliable testimony on the subject of health." Another passage helped me to see that food, in and of itself, was powerless to harm me: "Admit the common hypothesis that food is the nutriment of life, and there follows the necessity for another admission in the opposite direction,—that food has power to destroy Life, God, through a deficiency or an excess, a quality or a quantity.

"The fact is, food does not affect the absolute Life of man, and this becomes self-evident, when we learn that God is our Life."
