Finding our true, spiritual worth

Do we base our worth on our possessions or position or power? Christian Science shows man's real worth to be spiritual.

Have you ever thought what it would be like to be wealthy —truly rich? Many dream of this. Yet all the money, fortune, and fame in the world do not add up to the spiritual worth that is already ours as a child of God. As we discover the spiritual laws of God governing man, which Christian Science reveals, we can demonstrate with absolute, divine authority our real, spiritual wealth.

In Christian Science we learn man's true nature as a child of God. We learn that man is spiritual—complete and whole, totally reflecting God's goodness. God is All-in-all, and man is His highest expression. As we learn how to demonstrate our true, spiritual worth and value, we stop going along with the material picture and begin to reason along these lines: If God is good (and He is), and if man reflects Him (and he does), then man, in Science, is good, useful, valuable, and incapable of error, or sin. He is, by his very birthright, perfect, whole, and complete —according to the law of God, divine Principle. We demonstrate this freedom by doing good, by overcoming materiality and sensuality with the spiritual understanding of man. This isn't always easy, but wonderful discoveries await us as we learn who we really are and what our real worth is. Some years ago I had the opportunity to prove just what all that means.

Although I had a well-paying job and promising career at the time, I became so imbued with materialism and sensualism that I became ill and had to resign from work. I became very depressed when I realized what I was doing with and to my life. Like the prodigal son, I found I had wasted my substance with "riotous living" and was not living the wholesome life of pure, brotherly love that I knew a Christian Scientist should live. (It seemed to be all "me," and to heck with everyone else.)
