The filly who liked caps
Most of you have heard of The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss, but this is not a made-up story like that one. It is a true story about a real animal—a filly—and a real cap.
A filly is a young female horse. The one in this story was only six months old. She was small for her age but still taller than most ten-year-old boys and girls. She had long, graceful legs and a pert little nose. I say pert because she was always alert and eager to see whatever was going on. She would stick her nose out to sniff new and interesting objects, and she wasn't at all afraid of humans. In fact, she rather liked them.
This story happened in the middle of winter, just a few weeks before Christmas, so the filly, whose name was Basey ("Bossy" is how you say it), was covered with thick brown hair that kept her very warm despite the cold.
