When the need is relief

The special relationship of Church to community is never so clear as when people find themselves victims of some disaster. In addition to working with relief organizations to help meet immediate physical needs, churches have the unique opportunity to minister to the spiritual demands emergencies bring.

The proven talent of The Christian Science Board of Lectureship to adapt spiritual messages to community needs has resulted in some effective new ways The Mother Church has been able to support relief efforts in times of disaster. In recent months special lectures relevant to healing the claims and challenges of hurricane and earthquake have been sponsored by The Mother Church.

From the beginning, this Church has offered financial relief to disaster victims throughout the world, whether in Chernobyl or the Caribbean, through appropriate organizations such as the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. In addition, specific contributions sent to the Treasurer are distributed to carefully screened relief organizations. To date, over $100,000 has been sent to more than twenty such organizations to help victims of hurricane Hugo and the California earthquake.
