Wonder: a Christmas gift
A poignant story in Christian Century magazine recently caught my attention. It gave a fresh glimpse of the adult world as seen through the eyes of a child.
A family was eating sandwiches in a diner when a homeless man with tattered clothes and a crippled foot asked the father of the family to buy him a sandwich. As the father left the table with the stranger to order a sandwich for him, seven-year-old Jessica, who had at first been a little frightened by the man's appearance, asked her mother why her dad was buying the man a sandwich. The simple answer "because he is hungry" did not satisfy the little girl.
The mother writes of her conversation with her daughter: "'Jessica,... another reason Daddy is giving the man some food is because of something Jesus once said. He said that when you give a cup of water or some food to one of his [brethren], it is just like giving it to him.'
