As a child I was a student in the Christian Science Sunday School and was taught to do prayerful healing work for myself at a very early age. I have always been grateful for these early lessons, which have proved to be the foundation for a continuing love and appreciation for the teachings of Christian Science.

Later, during the childhood years of my two sons, I became aware of just how important it is to have a practical, reliable understanding of God as taught in Christian Science. I came to see that by acknowledging and truly understanding harmony as the law of spiritual being—our true being—we can experience the omnipresence and omnipotence of God in our lives. God is wholly good, infinite Spirit; we can turn to Him with any conceivable difficulty and find peace, comfort, and healing. In thinking back over the years, I am aware of many healing experiences for which I am deeply grateful, and there are two that I particularly cherish.

When my older son was about two years of age, our neighbor's boy passed on as a result of an epidemic of polio where we were living. This caused a great deal of fear in the neighborhood. One morning my son appeared to have every evidence of the disease. I called a Christian Science practitioner to help me pray for the child. I recall so clearly how she helped me see that God's law wholly sustains life and health. She also quoted these words from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy: "To admit that sickness is a condition over which God has no control, is to presuppose that omnipotent power is powerless on some occasions. The law of Christ, or Truth, makes all things possible to Spirit; but the so-called laws of matter would render Spirit of no avail, and demand obedience to materialistic codes, thus departing from the basis of one God, one lawmaker."
