Don't give up

I was talking to a worker who serves with an international relief organization. Our conversation was about relief efforts in Eritrea, Peru, and Soviet Armenia, all areas in which people have had to face great calamity. As important as food and other forms of relief are, what lies behind such supplies is perhaps most important. It is the message that others care. Surely this helps to counter the temptation to give up.

Disaster, of course, isn't limited to large-scale tragedies. After nearly thirty years of marriage, a couple decided to call it quits, which left one of the partners devastated. In another family, one member goes through wrenching personal problems. In yet another home, business reverses lead to bankruptcy and despair.

A best friend may not be one who says a great deal in tragic circumstances, but will be one who understands the challenges we face and seeks a way to help us not to give up.
