One morning in August 1989 I woke up with pain in my neck, shoulder, and one arm. I had never experienced such severe pain, and I thought I was in trouble. Immediately I declared to myself the spiritual truth that there is no reality in pain because God is infinite Truth, and I insisted that "pain" is therefore nothing but an error, a false belief.

I prayed very hard, but the healing did not come and I could not sleep at night. Several days later, the telephone rang. It was my daughter, who was in Australia, studying English. As my voice was weak, she was concerned and asked what had happened and what she could do for me. I explained my condition and asked her to get in touch with a Christian Science practitioner in Australia.

All that day I studied the Bible Lesson (outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly). I remembered the following statement in the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy: "Christian Science acts as an alterative, neutralizing error with Truth." I thought that a very effective method of treatment was to "neutralize" the voice of pain with the truth contained in the lesson.
