I am grateful for having been raised in Christian Science and for having seen God's law in operation from my earliest childhood. Although there was a period in my early adulthood when I took Christian Science for granted and when study of the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy seemed secondary to other pursuits, I never forgot all that I had learned from my mother and through my attendance in a Christian Science Sunday School.

The evening before Thanksgiving in 1989, I went to bed with a severe headache. I felt unable to read, but as I fell asleep I silently prayed to understand more of man's oneness with God. At three o'clock in the morning I woke and found I was blind in one eye.

At first I felt panic. Then I recalled a verse in Psalms: "Be still, and know that I am God." That one small statement erased all feeling of panic, and the truth of man's completeness as God's spiritual reflection flooded my thought. I knew that nothing could prevent me from seeing the power of divine Truth expressed in my life. I remembered this sentence from "the scientific statement of being" in Science and Health: "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all." The realization that in my true, spiritual being I was the unlimited manifestation of infinite Mind became clear to me.
