"Religion Called Pivotal in Europe"
"Religion is playing a 'pivotal role' in the democratization of Eastern and Central Europe, with church pastors taking part in new governments and providing moral guidance for their countries, said Rep. Doug Bereuter, R-Neb.
"'By their deeds and by their words, the clergy and laity of these long-oppressed religious communities are frequently ... acting as a moral beacon for a new era for their countries and the world,' Bereuter said....
"In addition, he said, churches have provided a 'moral beacon' for governments in dealing with former communist leaders....
"Unrich Seidel, pastor of the Nickolai Church in Leipzig ... has offered shelter to his former tormentors."
