Soon after my son-in-law moved his family to a large, populous state because of his business, my three-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter became quite ill. Alarmed, her parents consulted a pediatrician. The child was submitted to a battery of tests, then finally treated with an antibiotic and brought home.
In a few days my granddaughter seemed much better. So it was a blow to my daughter when the doctor telephoned and asked that the child be brought in for more tests. He said these were needed to substantiate the laboratory reports of the presence of a very rare bacillus which, if unchecked, could cause serious or even fatal kidney damage. He further explained that the condition was beyond his scope in medicine, and he recommended a specialist in a nearby city whom he would call and apprise of the situation.
My daughter (who had been raised as a pupil in a Christian Science Sunday School but had drifted away from Science) turned to the only Christian Science book she had, the Christian Science Hymnal, for comfort and inspiration.
