The cup and the wine
Christ offers the cup and we take it
willingly, knowing
the wine would escape through our fingers
without the cup to contain it—
a cup shaped and deepened and polished
by life's daily challenge and victory.
Love won't deny us the opportunity of the cup
emblazoned with the imprint of the cross,
for it is this cup—
stamped with self-immolation, the love
that replaces fear, the courage in tribulation—
which holds our sweet wine,
our sweet inspiration.
