I am very grateful to have been raised in Christian Science

I am very grateful to have been raised in Christian Science. My sister and brother and I shared in the abundance of love that surrounded our family, and each of us had wonderful demonstrations of the complete healing power of Christian Science.

The night before my high-school graduation ceremony there was a beach party. I brought a homemade rocket that I intended to launch out over the ocean during the evening. A close friend of mine and I had made these rockets many times and had successfully and safely set them off. But recently, for some reason, the rockets had been exploding. Even though we took precautions —using remote-control ignition—I knew that I was dealing with something that was potentially very dangerous. I also knew that taking one of these rockets to a party was foolish, but I went ahead.

This particular night I did not bother with the remote ignition and instead, in a hurry to show off, attached a short fuse. With my face only inches away I attempted to light the fuse, using only a match. The fuse turned out to be faulty. There was a blinding flash, a very loud noise, and then I was lying on my back, my eyes filled with burning debris from the exploded rocket.
