Is there any joy?

Christian Science has sometimes been misleadingly characterized as "trying to think happy thoughts." In fact, this shallow mental formula has very little to do with the serious effort of a Christian Scientist to live with the law of God, or divine Principle.

A superficial state of happiness about human life isn't the goal of Christianity. Happy, smiling people, invariably chirping platitudes, are undoubtedly not what Christ Jesus was giving his own life to achieve.

There were times when Jesus was sad. In the garden of Gethsemane the night before his crucifixion he said to two of his followers, "My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me." Matt. 26:38.
