When one of our children was about eighteen months old, he pulled a chair up to the kitchen stove and placed both his small hands on a hot burner from which a pan had just been removed.
I needed immediate aid for this child, and it was so natural for me to turn to God, the divine Parent, "a very present help in trouble" (Ps. 46:1). As I spoke tenderly to our son, he became quiet and peaceful and had no more discomfort during the healing process. I then called a Christian Science practitioner for prayerful assistance, not only to pray for the child but to heal my own feelings of guilt for not having watched him more closely.
Large blisters formed between our son's fingers. I will always remember the quick response and loving ministrations of a visiting Christian Science nurse, who came some distance to our rural home to cleanse and bandage the fingers. Her calm dedication and cheerful spirit added a great deal to the healing atmosphere in our home. Within a very short time the healing was complete.
