"This glasnost for religion—the muting of atheism and the emergence of religion as an element in national discussion—is the top religion story of the year in the view of the Century's editors.

"A benign attitude toward religion seems to have become a matter of political realism in a land where one in three citizens professes a belief in God, and there are three times as many religious believers as members of the Communist Party....
