Don't provide a road map!

Sickness needs our consent to "travel," and God's law of infinite good gives us the authority to refuse it permission.

"All disease is the result of education, and disease can carry its ill-effects no farther than mortal mind maps out the way." Science and Health, p. 176 .

Some years ago, I was not yet studying Christian Science deeply, I was able to prove the truth of those words from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. There was a flu epidemic in our city. I was employed by a small advertising agency then, and the epidemic was the main topic of conversation. Everyone came to work feeling fine one day, but by noon only four of us remained on the job. Soon I began experiencing some of the symptoms.

A passage from the Bible came to thought: "Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler." Ps. 91:3, 4. Such comforting assurance helped calm the fear, which was certainly "noisome," leaving me free to take a good look at my thinking. Did I want to follow the path being presented by the concern and conversation around me, or did I want to turn away from matter-based thinking and reason spiritually concerning my and everyone's well-being? Like Paul, I chose "rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord." II Cor. 5:8. Firmly acknowledging the healing presence of God—the one infinite cause and creator—and recognizing His love for all His creation stopped the distress. I was soon well and free to go on with my work.
