How thankful I am for the daily opportunity to study the Bible together with the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. These two books and the Bible Lessons found in the Christian Science Quarterly have proved to be my guide and mainstay for more than half my life, and it is time I related some instances of healing both of physical troubles and unhappy situations.

Most of the past thirty years have been happily and usefully spent caring for my family and taking part in activities at my branch Church of Christ, Scientist. But about five years ago a succession of difficulties began to assail me. At first I struggled with a cold, accompanied by bronchial attacks. This was healed, but then headaches, a bowel virus, backaches, and stiffness following a sudden fall were problems that needed to be dealt with. They were all healed, often with the prayerful support and help of a Christian Science practitioner.

This succession of disturbances seemed to me to be described in a passage on page 540 of Science and Health: "In Isaiah we read: 'I make peace, and create evil. I the Lord do all these things;' but the prophet referred to divine law as stirring up the belief in evil to its utmost, when bringing it to the surface and reducing it to its common denominator, nothingness. The muddy river-bed must be stirred in order to purify the stream."
