At the time of the birth of one of our children, the delivering physician diagnosed a goiter in my neck and wanted to call in a specialist to see me for immediate treatment. This I declined, but the diagnosis filled me with fear.

Later I visited a Christian Science practitioner and asked for help through prayer. I also arranged to go to a nearby sanatorium for Christian Scientists for a few days of quiet prayer. Able to give full attention to the Bible and a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I began to feel safe in God's love.

The practitioner had asked me to examine my thoughts to see if they affirmed God's love and presence and, if not, to reject them. As we read in II Corinthians (10:3-5), "Though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ."
