What Stephen learned
Stephen was eleven years old, and he was careless about his belongings. He didn't mean to be careless. It was just that he had so much to think about—exciting things like playing football on the school team, sailing with friends, or helping with the calves and lambs at a nearby farm. And fishing. More than anything, Stephen liked to go fishing.
Just before the summer holidays Stephen's mum got him a lovely new raincoat, and one day she allowed him to wear it to school because it was raining hard. Stephen felt so warm and dry he didn't mind the rain at all.
That day his class went for swimming lessons at baths (a swimming pool) quite a long way from his home. Stephen enjoyed the lesson. He was becoming quite a good swimmer and thought he might soon get on the swim team.
