I became interested in Christian Science as a young woman...
I became interested in Christian Science as a young woman through the healing of a close relative. Several years later respiratory attacks occurred and became more frequent and increasingly severe.
A family member who was not a Christian Scientist insisted on calling a doctor. When the doctor came, he said I had asthma and added that he had never seen such severe attacks in a person my age. He also said there was no cure for it, but he recommended some temporary medical treatment and suggested that we move to a different location. The doctor also said he couldn't promise a long life, as he did not think I would be able to stand the attacks too long.
I prayed about the condition. The twenty-third Psalm was very helpful, as was the following passage from The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany by Mrs. Eddy (pp. 149–150): "Remember, thou canst be brought into no condition, be it ever so severe, where Love has not been before thee and where its tender lesson is not awaiting thee. Therefore despair not nor murmur, for that which seeketh to save, to heal, and to deliver, will guide thee, if thou seekest this guidance."
