For many years I was a victim of child abuse
For many years I was a victim of child abuse. Some of my relatives were aware of what was going on. However, their attitude was that I'd outgrow it or that it was none of their business. There was also the old standard "I don't want to get involved."
Finally my maternal grandfather removed me from that environment. He also enrolled me in a Christian Science Sunday School. Being shy and withdrawn, I simply sat in my Sunday School classes and listened. It was a slow process, but eventually I became more receptive to the teachings of Christian Science and overcame the fear that everyone was out to get me.
One of the most beautiful Bible stories I remember learning was the one telling of Christ Jesus' putting a little child in the midst of the disciples (see Matt. 18:1–6). I came to feel like that child—enveloped in Truth and Love, where no harm comes to any of God's children.
