When I was a young woman I developed a difficulty with my back. It was acutely painful. I had trouble with the most ordinary activities—standing, sitting, and especially walking. It was eventually diagnosed as ankylosing spondylitis. Heavy doses of anti-inflammatory medication were prescribed, and I was told to learn to live with the condition.

Well, I tried numerous special diets, chiropractors, exercises I did faithfully for years, physiotherapy, positive visualization, pyschotherapy, manipulative medicine, and homeopathy. I read every book I could find on arthritis and on the psychogenesis of disease. Nothing helped much, or for long. I was unable to work, my marriage broke up, and I lost my home.

My second husband was a student of Christian Science. When I first heard of Christian Science I was not the slightest bit interested. We both went to our separate churches on Sunday. By then I was attending a mainstream Christian church that had healing services, and I felt very loved and happy there. My physical troubles had not diminished, however, and I lived a most restricted life.
