In my early years in Christian Science, through an unexpected series of events I became a partner in a small book-packaging firm. A "packager" produces books but is dependent on the big publishers for sales and distribution. An important part of my job was to contract with executives of large publishing firms to sell and distribute our books. As an author, in years past I had barely had enough confidence to deal with the junior editors of these companies, never mind their bosses. It was a very anxious time for me.

The Christian Scientist who had introduced me to the study of Science offered the idea that there really is just one divine Mind. He assured me that God sustains each one of us and that this Mind is man's to express. He said we all can prove this in our daily work and living, that all the intelligence needed to succeed in whatever work God leads us to is always present.

The concept was hard to grasp and harder to accept. I had to free myself from the belief that I was limited by my shortcomings, vulnerable, and alone.
