Better than swimming in the river
Summer camp in the Ozarks was far from my home and family! But I liked everything.
There were breakfast hikes with bacon and pancakes cooked outdoors by the river. There was roasting marshmallows in the campfire at night. We learned the funniest songs and made puppets and put on shows.
Best of all, the summer I was eleven I finally learned to swim. When I first arrived, I had to swim in the beginners' pool, a wooden pen with a board bottom. But by the end of my stay I had graduated to the river. I was able to swim halfway across the river where a landing was anchored.
