In 1967 I was diagnosed as having arthritis after X-rays were taken in connection with a back injury. The prognosis indicated I would continue to experience more arthritic difficulties with age. (I was a young man at the time, and this came as quite a shock.) It was recommended that I not do any heavy work to aggravate my back. I gave up the sport of riding motorcycles and generally accepted that I would have to put up with this condition, though, having been raised in Christian Science, I felt deep down inside that the answer lay in prayer. (I was not practicing Science at this time.)

In later years the symptoms became so aggressive that I went to another doctor, who referred me to a center that specialized in arthritis. Tests and X-rays confirmed the earlier diagnosis, and I began treatment with medication and exercise. As time went on, various types of medication were prescribed in increasing dosages in an attempt to eliminate the discomforts associated with the condition. In addition to this I found myself suffering from headaches, and I used more material means to combat this. The worst part of the entire situation was the helplessness I was feeling; the outlook was bleak at best.

At this point I spoke several times with a Christian Science practitioner, who helped me see that I could turn to God and trust in Him no matter what the situation. I discarded all of the medication and asked the practitioner for treatment through prayer in Christian Science.
