Breaking through barriers to spiritual progress

Do you sometimes feel that you have reached a plateau in your understanding of God? Do you see the upward goal, but seem unable to go higher? Many things may try to block our spiritual progress, including the failure to acknowledge our need to be saved.

Christ Jesus once said, "I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." Mark 2:17. Aren't we sometimes tempted to put ourselves into the "righteous" category? Of course, we learn in Christian Science that man is not a miserable sinner but the loved and perfect child of God. But if that's the case, whom did Jesus come to save?

The twelve disciples were men who openly accepted Christ Jesus as their Saviour. Were they all sinners? Each one of them had his own history, but generally we find them to be of good character. For example, Simon Peter seemed to be a good man. We know he had a family and friends. We get the sense that he was a hard worker, honest, forthright, and strong. Certainly this is not the picture of a sinner! What was it, then, that caused Peter to drop everything and follow Jesus? Wasn't it the attraction of the Christ, the true idea of God, which Jesus represented?
