This testimony is written in grateful acknowledgment of the fact that God continuously guides, protects, and governs us. I have had wonderful proofs of God's ceaseless care, and I would like to share one that is very special to me. It is a healing that completely changed my life.
Although I attended a Christian Science Sunday School while I was growing up and became a member of The Mother Church, I felt a general sense of rebellion. When I moved out of my parents' house I left Christian Science behind. By that time I had picked up the habits of drinking and smoking. I felt a confusion and a lack of direction and purpose in my life; alcohol was becoming a quick release from my growing unhappiness. My moral standards were pretty low, as I had concluded that whatever I did made no difference to me or to anyone else.
I suffered great mental anguish, and life became a burden I felt unable to deal with. My actions became very self-destructive; I contemplated suicide and almost succeeded in one attempt. Finally I had a mental breakdown and was confined to various mental institutions during a period of over two years. My parents, who lovingly stood by me throughout that time, offered to help me and even were willing to call a Christian Science practitioner to pray for me. I vehemently declined, stating that that was the last thing I wanted.
