Bible Notes PULLOUT SECTION

Related to the Lesson-Sermons for September 1987

Each Lesson-Sermon published in the Christian Science Quarterly—Bible Lessons is designed to be complete in itself. Its Bible references (King James Version) are corroborated and explained by passages from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. These Bible Notes are offered by the Christian Science Sentinel as indications of the possibilities for individual research.

Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands? (Isa. 45:9)

The Revised Standard Version (RSV) expresses the prophet's image: "Woe to him who strives with his Maker, an earthen vessel with the potter! Does the clay say to him who fashions it, 'What are you making?' or 'Your work has no handles'?" With similar effect, the translators of The New English Bible (NEB) take "hands" in a metaphorical sense: "You have no skill."
