My adventure at the beach
Once when I was four I was left all alone at the beach. Here's what happened. My family and some friends had gone to the ocean to spend the day. There were nine of us there: Mommy, Daddy, my new baby brother, the baby sitter to help with the baby, our close friends and their two girls. We had a good time playing in the sand and the water. I was allowed to play in the very shallow water, but I was always supposed to be where Mommy and Daddy could see me and I could see them.
Here comes the scary part! When I came up the beach to find them, my family and friends were gone. I was frightened. I went up to the very top of the beach. I started walking back and forth, and as I walked I cried. But do you know what else I did? I sang Mrs. Eddy's hymn—my favorite—"Shepherd, show me how to go...." Christian Science Hymnal, No. 304. The complete stanza reads:
At my Christian Science Sunday School I'd learned that God is the Shepherd who shows me how to go. Mommy and Daddy had always taught me that God loves me very much and is always right with me no matter where I am.
