Christian Science has been a way of life for me since I was about four years old. At that time my mother took up the study of this teaching and remained an earnest student for the rest of her life. Eventually she became a Christian Science practitioner.

The earliest healing I remember was one my father had. One day my mother asked him if he would be willing to quit smoking. He said he would be glad to give it up if that appetite should leave him. Mother, who was a new student of Christian Science at the time, prayed about this. In less than two weeks my father quit smoking and never smoked again.

Later my father had a wonderful healing of a badly shattered leg. The injury had been sustained in a railroad accident. The doctors told him the leg would not heal and they wanted to amputate it, but my father refused. (Eventually the doctors put the leg in a cast even though they didn't want to.) Through prayer in Science, the leg was completely healed, and after thirteen months my father went back to his job on the railroad as a freight conductor.
