The importance of being honest
How often I've prayed for the moral courage this child expressed.
On our bedroom wall hangs a small, penciled statement written in the wandering letters of childhood's hand. "Mom, I'm so unhappy that I said a li." This appeared on my pillow shortly after our son, then seven, had fabricated a school escapade that I had sympathetically taken in. The "li" is long since forgotten, but not the purity and moral courage that underlay the confession.
