I Recently traveled with my two young sons to share a vacation with a friend and her daughter in a city equidistant from our respective homes—about a nine-hundred-mile drive. The last night of our vacation together I was stricken with what appeared to be an extreme case of food poisoning while shopping with my friend and our children. I wondered how I could possibly get back to the hotel, not to mention the long drive home I was supposed to make the following day. I felt overwhelmed and helpless.
But then I quickly realized that I had divine aid. I prayed calmly, and the thought came that I was not alone. God, ever present and ever active, was right there with me.
Under the impulsion of this simple truth, I was able to go on with the help of my friend, who saw my urgent need. She drove us all back to the hotel and took the children to a back bedroom while I telephoned a local Christian Science practitioner for help through prayer. The practitioner's response was firm and immediate, declaring that food could not determine the condition of my well-being, because man's health is established and maintained by God. I drank in this spiritual truth with gratitude and conviction, knowing that as Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy states (p. 427), "Nothing can interfere with the harmony of being nor end the existence of man in Science." I affirmed that the God-derived qualities of strength, peace, health, freedom, could never be usurped. By the time I hung up the phone after this brief conversation, the pain had completely disappeared. Needless to say, the drive home the following day was a joyous one.
