Throughout a lifetime of relying on God in Christian Science...
Throughout a lifetime of relying on God in Christian Science for the healing of every ill, I have found that each healing has, at its core, a blessing beyond mere physical adjustment or improvement. Of the many healings that I can recall with a sense of having been lifted spiritually higher or moved perceptibly forward on the Christly path, one that occurred in the spring and summer of 1984 is most vivid to me.
While I was driving alone on a highway one afternoon, my car was struck by a van as I crossed an intersection. I was taken, unconscious, to a hospital and my family was notified. As my son related to me later, he was the first of the family to reach the hospital. There he was shown X-rays indicating I had a broken neck, with one vertebra missing. The diagnosis included severe concussion in addition to lacerations and other surface damage.
At the time, I was not able to make the decision as to what type of treatment would be followed; I was not fully conscious. So this decision was up to my family, who told the staff at the hospital that I was a Christian Scientist and requested that I be given no medication. Within a day and a half my family arranged to have me taken by ambulance to a nursing facility for Christian Scientists one hundred and fifty miles from our home.
