Does God talk to us?

Many people talk to God. But does God talk to us? How do we hear God's voice and benefit from His guidance?

When I first established my real estate company, I realized that good communication was a key to success. I attended many workshops and seminars to learn the skills and theories for good communication, and while these were somewhat helpful, they did not furnish me with the ultimate answers. To be of genuine service, I needed something more: an inner spiritual perception to understand the needs of both parties—needs that were sometimes not even apparent to the buyer or the seller.

As a Christian Scientist, I saw this could only be accomplished through a spiritual understanding of Spirit, Soul, which are synonyms of God as given in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. We learn in the study of Christian Science that there is only one Soul, God, who is infinite Love, the all-knowing and all-perceiving Mind and all-pervading Spirit. We can never be separated from the intelligence of Soul, because in truth we are Mind's expression, God's perfect idea.

Proving these truths does require a yielding of human opinions and strategizing. Obedience, integrity, humility, are essential, as an experience I had has taught me. One day I received a call from an attorney who was representing the plaintiff in a litigation. He wanted to ask me some questions regarding a property that I had sold a few years before. In recalling the sale, I remembered that my inspection of the house had revealed the precarious situation of the building on the side of the hill. Feeling unsure about what to do, I had turned to God for divine direction. The intuitive message had come loud and clear: "Do not list the property unless the owner is willing to have a soil engineer's report in writing stating that the house is safe and firmly anchored." (This was not the usual practice for real estate agents in this area, because a great many of the houses are constructed on hillsides.) The owner had agreed; the engineer's affirmative report had been placed on file and had been signed by the buyer before escrow closed.
