It may depend on which research statistics we've just read whether we suppose the family is a failing institution or it is holding its own. But we don't need statistics to tell us that the sense of family has been under severe attack in modern society. Outspoken advocacy of "open" marriages has now given way to pervasive, if subtle, advertising for self-fulfillment at any cost.

Perhaps one thing is becoming clear. The sense of family we remember with the greatest tenderness and the sense of family we yearn to see more of—among relatives or in business or in church—has little or no basis in material circumstance. It arises instead from spirituality, from Christly love.

It begins with deeper trust in God as our Father and Mother. And then we're called on to nurture and live with this spiritual trust in the midst of daily life. We have to choose unselfish love—and spiritual perspective— even when it seems hard to do so. Enough of the right choices can add up to a stronger sense of family—not just for our own small circle but for the whole family of man.
