Bible Notes PULLOUT SECTION

Related to the Lesson-Sermons for March 1987

Each Lesson-Sermon published in the Christian Science Quarterly—Bible Lessons is designed to be complete in itself. Its Bible references (King James Version) are corroborated and explained by passages from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. These Bible Notes are offered by the Christian Science Sentinel as indications of the possibilities for individual research.

For this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth (John 18:37)

In John's Gospel, "truth" (Greek: alétheia) has been seen as having a meaning beyond its use elsewhere. As explained by C. H. Dodd in The Interpretation of the Fourth Gospel, alétheia "stands ... for the realm of pure and eternal reality, as distinct from this world of transient phenomena. ... It means eternal reality as revealed to men—either the reality itself or the revelation of it."
