Some years ago a small growth appeared on the bottom of one of my heels, which made it unbearable to put any weight on that foot. At the time I was working as a waitress and was required to be on my feet six to eight hours a day. Considerable concern was voiced by those I worked with. They all knew that I was a student of Christian Science, however, and they respected my desire to work this difficulty out through prayer.

When, after a number of weeks of praying on my own, the situation remained unchanged, I asked for prayerful support from a Christian Science practitioner. She helped me work to recognize man's spiritual selfhood, untouched by any inharmonious condition. A statement that became dear to me is one from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 463): "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive." I found myself constantly looking for a change in the physical condition, however, and wondering if I'd ever walk normally again.

The turning point came when I was reading a testimony in a copy of the Sentinel by a young man who had broken his leg while tobogganing. In his prayer he had been impressed by Christ Jesus' words to the impotent man at the pool of Bethesda (John 5:8), "Rise, take up thy bed, and walk." The man had been instantaneously healed, and so was the young man with the broken leg.
