Every six months when the Bible Lesson outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly...
Every six months when the Bible Lesson outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly is on the subject "God the Preserver of Man," I give thanks for proofs I have had of God's protective and preserving power. One experience remains vividly in my memory.
At the time, my wife and I lived in a remote country village where the only form of power was electricity delivered by overhead lines. Those lines were often struck by lightning. During the week under discussion, my wife and I had been studying the Bible Lesson very earnestly, affirming God's ever-presence and omnipotence.
On Saturday afternoon my wife was cooking while a thunderstorm rumbled overhead. I was close to the electric cooker when my wife called and asked me to turn the pan off. As I approached the control, there was a crack like a pistol shot, and a huge spark passed between my elbow and the metal panhandle. This was followed by a terrific clap of thunder. The size of the spark indicated the power of the electrical charge, yet I was aware of nothing more than a slight tingling in my arm.
