Release from pain
An understanding of man's true, spiritual nature can bring freedom from pain.
Anyone in pain wants to be free of it. And for the one seeking relief—whether from mental anguish or physical pain —there is comforting reassurance. Pain can indeed be healed through Christ, the saving message of divine Truth.
Christ, or Truth, destroys pain by destroying the thoughts, or false beliefs, that produce it. Does this mean pain is merely psychosomatic? Definitely not. Christian Science doesn't superficially assert that pain is "all in your imagination anyway." It goes much deeper than that to root out and destroy pain by destroying its cause.
If we are in pain, we generally assume that a material condition is the cause, and that fibers called nerves are the means through which we are feeling the pain. But all ills of the flesh actually manifest what Christian Science terms mortal mind, the conscious and unconscious beliefs of materiality, beliefs that regard matter as intelligent and as the substance of man's life. When we learn to view man from a diviner standpoint, as spiritual, we see that matter actually has no intelligence to feel pain.
