When I was between eight and ten, my mother, grandmother,...
When I was between eight and ten, my mother, grandmother, an aunt, two uncles, and finally my father, passed on with various physical disorders. All of these people had been under the finest medical care available. By the time I had reached ten years of age I felt strongly that material medicine simply did not hold the issues of life. Even at that young age, I sensed that the vicissitudes of life called for a remedy for the ills of the flesh, and I wondered what I would do in the case of sickness or injury.
One day as I was saying the Lord's Prayer (I had been taught, in a Sunday School of another denomination, to say it three times a day), this sudden flash of spiritual insight came to me: "Jesus healed as he prayed, and he gave us the Lord's Prayer." Here was my answer. It served to inspire me and to pave the way for my receptivity to Christian Science. (Many years later, while I was studying the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I read the following [p. 14]: "The Lord's Prayer is the prayer of Soul, not of material sense.")
During the past thirty years there were three occasions when I was delivered from very serious situations. While I was in a hospital after the birth of a child, it was determined that I had a dangerously high fever. For the next eight hours I became the focus of an intensive diagnostic search for the cause. Nine specialists were involved. The doctors finally issued the prognosis that I was near death and could not live without an operation.
