Living the Fifth Commandment

Have you noticed a recent development that indicates a renewed appreciation of harmony within families? Some current television shows that present a wholesome and loving relationship between parents and their children are increasingly popular with audiences. Publishers have brought out a number of books on the theme of mending fractured relationships with one's parents.

I'm grateful for these encouraging signs, yet I also think that perhaps something more dependable and unchanging than good intent and human effort will be required to heal and govern discordant circumstances where parents and children are not getting along well or are estranged. The Bible is an indispensable source of help for us. It contains unalterable spiritual truths that have helped people through the ages meet the demands of daily life. It turns us to God in prayer to understand the real, spiritual nature of God and man and to perceive our eternal relation to Him and thereby to our fellow beings. It shows the blessings that accrue to those willing to be obedient to God.
