We can rise to the occasion

I've often thought of how differently Peter and Jesus responded to events when Jesus was arrested. There was Jesus, singled out, the focus of hatred, jealousy, and even the infidelity of his disciples, who weren't equal to the crisis. Yet Jesus held firm and met the test, while Peter didn't.

Later, of course, Peter had many more opportunities to prove himself. And if he failed in one instance, he didn't give up. His understanding of God's law and love continued to grow, even after Jesus was no longer personally present to lead his disciples, and Peter proved he could indeed rise to the occasion. See Matt. 26:36-43, 69-75; John 21:15-22; Acts 2:38-41; 4:1, 2, 18-21; 12:1-17 .

Rising to meet the occasion is very important. Hardly a week goes by that a parent doesn't have to do just that in the care of his or her children. In fact the same thing could be said for anyone, anywhere. The unexpected often seems a fact of life!
