A great beginning
Occasionally someone casually remarks, "Oh, yes, I've read some of Science and Health," or "I glanced through a copy a friend of mine had." To anyone who has gone deeper into the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy, such statements are like saying one has seen the Grand Canyon when he has only looked at a tiny picture postcard of it.
Two men were talking at lunch one day, and one of them mentioned a program he planned to attend. It was to be given by a psychologist on the subject "Handling pain and stress." His friend, who had given him a copy of the textbook previously but had little reason to think the man had done much with it, remarked: "You know, you could get more lasting benefit from the very first page of the very first chapter of Science and Health." Startled, the first man thought a moment, then agreed to go back and start over with the textbook.
On page 1 of this remarkable book the reader gains a glimpse of the tremendous benefits he can obtain by a thoughtful reading and application of the points brought out in the succeeding pages. The first chapter starts by quoting a statement by the greatest teacher and physician mankind has ever known—Christ Jesus. It reads: "For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them." Mark 11:23, 24.
