Our family was introduced to Christian Science through a healing of my father's sister, who lived in New York City. My aunt, a concert pianist, had lost the use of her hands due to stiffening of her wrists. In searching for help, she had gone to a city where she was to receive medical treatment for the problem. A couple, who were students of Mary Baker Eddy, were staying at the same place as my aunt and, seeing my aunt's need, told her of the healing power of Christian Science. She was most open to having Christian Science treatment and, in fact, received an instantaneous healing of the stiffness in her wrists. Because of her gratitude for this healing, my aunt's greatest desire was to serve God. In due time she left her work as a concert pianist and eventually became a Christian Science practitioner.
When my aunt visited our home in the Midwest after her healing, she introduced us to Christian Science, which soon became our way of life. Later local people interested in Christian Science began meeting in homes until a public hall, in which to hold Christian Science Sunday services, was secured. Though we had no Sunday School exercises then, I well remember how a dedicated member took my sisters and me aside and instructed us in the basic teachings of Christian Science. These sessions were most helpful to our budding interest in God.
A healing took place in our family that I particularly remember my mother telling about. My father was in a neighboring town inspecting an old building when a wall collapsed on him. As soon as my mother heard about it, she went to be with him. When she arrived she was told there was little hope that my father would survive. She quickly wired her sister-in-law in New York City for help through prayer. (All medical treatment had been stopped by then.) Much to our joy Father returned home in a short time, completely well. He had been healed completely, and there was no period of convalescence.
