Soon after I was enrolled in the Christian Science...

Soon after I was enrolled in the Christian Science Sunday School at the age of ten, I was healed of severe attacks of bronchitis and tonsillitis. On two previous occasions (before our family had come into Christian Science) such attacks had developed into pneumonia, and the family doctor had predicted I would never be strong and healthy. However, these ailments ceased to appear as I learned, in Christian Science, of God's love and care. "The unbiased Christian thought is soonest touched by Truth, and convinced of it," states Mary Baker Eddy in the Preface to Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (p. x).

This beautiful teaching was introduced to our family at a time when Christian Science was little known in our community. When my mother observed quick healings through prayer alone in the family next door, her deep, spiritual yearnings led her to investigate her neighbors' religion. From this gentle beginning, a new way of life opened for us all, and in the many years since that time every member of my family has had proof of the healing power of Christian Science.

One of these healings was my grandfather's. In his seventieth year he became ill with what was medically diagnosed as dropsy. When he lapsed into a coma and my grandmother was told to notify her family that he was dying, my mother refused to accept this verdict. As no medicine was being given at that point and the physician had said he would not be back until the end came, a Christian Science practitioner was asked to treat Grandfather through prayer. In less than two weeks Grandfather was up and making steady progress, until he was restored to health. He was with us another twenty years.
