Bible Notes PULLOUT SECTION
Related to the Lesson-Sermons for January 1987
Each Lesson-Sermon published in the Christian Science Quarterly—Bible Lessons is designed to be complete in itself. Its Bible references (King James Version) are corroborated and explained by passages from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. These Bible Notes are offered by the Christian Science Sentinel as indications of the possibilities for individual research.
He that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow (Rev. 4:3)
The book of Revelation relies heavily on symbolism, usually calling upon Old Testament motifs to depict the spiritual themes. With this passage one might compare somewhat similar language in Ezekiel 1:26–28 and 10:1, and remember the jeweled glory prophesied for Jerusalem in Isaiah 54:11, 12 (compare Rev. 21:10, 11, 18–21). The rainbow pictured here could symbolize the glory of God (see Ezek. 1:28) or the unbreakable covenant between God and man (see Gen. 9:12, 13).
