I would like to express my gratitude for an instance of protection...

I would like to express my gratitude for an instance of protection I had several years ago. This experience proved to me without a doubt that God is "a very present help in trouble" (Ps. 46:1).

I was traveling on my motorcycle from St. Louis to Boston, where I had accepted a new job. Accompanying me were some friends, traveling by car. We had agreed that I would follow them as far as their home in western New York State. As we started out, the weather was sunny, but after we had passed through Indianapolis, it began to rain. The rain was hard and steady.

Traveling long distances, one has a lot of time to think and pray. During the trip a passage in Psalms came to mind (46:10): "Be still, and know that I am God." At the time I didn't know where in the Bible this verse was from, or when the last time was that I had read it, but the words came to me strongly that rainy afternoon, so I started thinking about them. The second half of the phrase, "and know that I am God," was especially comforting and reassuring to me. I really felt that God wanted me to know Him, to feel His strength, His power, and His gentle love for His children. What happened minutes later was glorious proof to me of the truth of what I had been realizing of God.
