I'm told that I wasn't a very promising physical specimen shortly after birth. In fact, doubts were expressed by the doctor as to whether I'd survive. A family friend who was also a Christian Science practitioner had explained a little of Science to my mother. She came to visit Mother soon after my birth. I'm told that when the practitioner looked at me she said, "But he's spiritual!" The remark caught Mother's attention. She told me years later that although she didn't realize then that this practitioner friend was drawing the distinction between the human condition—or what appeared to be—and my true identity as the image and likeness of God, Mother's thought began to change. In a short time my health was normal.

During the first years of my life my parents were divorced. Afterward Mother began to study Christian Science more actively When she remarried, my stepfather began studying Science, too, and our home was blessed in many ways as a result.

At one point, my stepfather was out of work for nearly a year. But he left the house every morning with other commuters and spent the day looking for work. Also he studied and prayed often in a Christian Science Reading Room during this time. I was not told then of this unselfish struggle. Eventually, through my parents' daily study of Science and the prayerful help of a practitioner, a worthwhile and rewarding position opened up. My stepfather was happily employed in that job until his retirement.
